Malcolm X’s Daughters sue the CIA, FBI, and NYPD over father’s assassination
Three daughters of Malcolm X have accused the CIA, FBI, the New York Police Department and others in a $100 million lawsuit Friday of playing roles in the 1965 assassination of the civil rights leader.
In the lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court, the daughters and the Malcolm X estate claimed the agencies were aware of and were involved in the assassination plot and failed to stop the killing.
The X Estate is represented by black activist superstar corporate lawyer Ben Crump, who has involved himself in the cases of Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown, George Floyd, Keenan Anderson, Sonya Massey, the Flint water crisis, the Travis Scott Astroworld crush, the Johnson and Johnson baby powder lawsuit, and more. He was the attorney for the families of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. He is sometimes referred to as Black America’s attorney general.
The NYPD and CIA did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for the Department of Justice, which was also sued, declined comment. The FBI said in an email that it was its “standard practice” not to comment on litigation.
Malcolm X was shot dead on February 21, 1965 as he was addressing a 400-strong audience at the Organization of Afro-American Unity in Manhattan’s Audubon Ballroom. A man rushed forward and shot him in the chest with a sawed-off shotgun, followed by two other men firing semi-automatic handguns. Malcolm X was pronounced dead a half hour later at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.
In the crowd and confusion, only one assassin was stopped, Thomas Hagan of the Nation of Islam. Two other guys were scooped up later on. Hagan admitted to being in on the killing, and said the other two had nothing to do with it, yet all three were given life in prison. In 2021, after the release of the documentary, those two random dudes were fully exonerated of their crimes (55 years later).

🌙 American Letter of Marque, 1812
An example letter signed by one famous president.
“Since crews were not paid by the state, privateers were entitled to cruise for their own profit. Admiralty courts in England or equivalent prize courts elsewhere judged the legitimacy of all captures under the prize laws. This method of commerce destruction was adopted by all nations from the earliest times until the 19th century, but it frequently proved impossible to restrain the activities of privateers within the legitimate bounds laid down in their commissions or letters of marque. Hence, in earlier times, it was often difficult to distinguish between privateers, pirates, corsairs, or buccaneers, many of whom sailed without genuine commissions.”

🌙 How much would it cost to outfit and run your own pirate ship & crew?
In 2009 the cost to build a replica of Blackbeard’s sloop Adventure, a much smaller ship, was estimated at $3.7 million.
Most pirate ships were fairly small, with maybe a dozen guns and crews of around 50, but some carried crews of more than 200, and the Queen Anne’s Revenge carried 300 to 400.
“took current U.S. Navy pay rates and multiplied them by 1.4 to cover everything from Social Security and Medicare to 401K contributions arriving at an annual cost of $11.3 million”
Costs for food, drink, and other essentials can be estimated by a standard business contractor per diem charge of $75 per person per day, or about $8.2 million. Total crew costs: about $19.5 million per year.
The Queen Anne’s Revenge sported up to 40 cannon plus numerous swivel guns and small arms. A full-size 32- to 36-pound iron cannon costs about $22,000, and cannon-grade black powder is about $15 per pound. At five to six pounds of powder per shot, firing 40 guns (let’s say) 250 times per voyage would require 55,000 pounds of powder, or about $825,000. Throwing in the price of cannonballs, we get a total armaments cost of about $5.6 million.
“around $36 million for a one-year voyage.”
🌙 Cost of a Mid-17th Century Pirate Ship in Today’s Money: A Detailed Breakdown
Admiralty records from the 17th century indicate privateer and pirate sloops—small and agile vessels preferred for their speed and maneuverability—had a purchase price of about one pound per ton. For example, a typical pirate sloop weighing 100 tons would cost 100 pounds then.
🌙 Can we compare wages of merchant ship captain in the Pirate Era compare to today?
£24 – annual salary of a merchant vessel captain.
the implication would be that the £1,000 distributed to each of the crewmembers in Thomas Tew’s fleet would be worth something in the range of $3,506,000 today.
