A NEW START
Johatsu (蒸発) or “evaporation” in Japanese.
Johatsu means you leave your home and begin a new life.
Japanese culture demands a lot from a person. They say the most brutal work cultures can be found in Asia, with her neighbors Korea and China being infamous. There’s no denying Japan works hard, plays hard, and commits violently to the worthy.
Overwhelmed in their cities, pressured by familial and societal obligations, there are crushed souls who wish to escape.
According to the BBC, around the 1960s Japanese men were disappearing all over the country. Many were attempting to escape debts incurred during the hard years following World War II. Also, divorce was and still is socially taboo and complicated in Japan. Some thought it was easier to start new lives rather than formally divorce their wives. Businesses were built up around the idea of creating a new life.
Why does it stay at around 80K a year missing?
THE SERVICE
Yonigeya (よにげや) or “fly-by-night movers” can be contacted online to arrange for an “evaporation”. Here’s one site for a company specializing in helping women who are abused or stalked. They help people disappear overnight.
The Heisei era began in 1989 as the Shōwa period ended. Emperor Shōwa, ruling from 1926 to 1989, was both the longest-lived and longest-reigning Japanese emperor in history.
Today’s world is a smaller place than in years past. Soldiers at war in other lands could sire children and entire families, only to return home and never see them again. It used to be that a woman could kill her husband, abandon the state and take residence in a new one with a very good chance of evading justice.
Before cell phones and the internet, we shuffled around rather anonymously, hidden by a distance unfathomable to young people of this time. Now anyone can contact anyone on the planet instantly, and travel to anywhere in two days.
There are plenty who have faked death successfully. The ones we know of usually commit singular mistakes later in life that, had they not been made, would have kept them secret forever.
HAPPY EVAPORATING

🌙 Chain Saws Were Invented to Help in Childbirth?
I Hope You Know I Pack A Chainsaw - Vroooom goes the guzzling machine known as the chainsaw. But did you know its origins go back further than felling trees?
Second Mortgage - A brief explainer of the complications of childbirth
Pig Castrator - Typically a fatal operation for the mother, the first allegedly documented case of a survivor didn’t occur until the 18th century. 1830 in Ohio is the first documented case of a “successful” caesarian, at least where the mother survived. In this case the baby did not. It was done by candlelight in a log cabin during a thunderstorm too.
Caesar Sighting - ROME
Scots Saw - The first documented surgical saw of this capacity was used for a different type of operation called a symphysiotomy. It was invented in the the late 18th century by two Scottish doctors, John Aitken and James Jeffray.

Sawing The World By Storm - In 1830, Bernard Heine created the osteotome, which featured a hand crank. This is the model that would go on to inspire timber saws. It was also used during the Civil War for amputation surgeries. In 1894, Italian obstetrician Leonardo Gigli introduced another modification to the medical chain saw, the Gigli saw.
Give Me Fuel - The end of the 19th century brings the idea of using these saws for lumber. Check out some of these patents!
