A Washington rancher was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison and will pay nearly a quarter-billion in restitution following the discovery of his “ghost cattle” scheme, which is one of the largest-ever fraud convictions in the state’s history.
Ghost Cattle 1 - Easterday
Cody Allen Easterday, age 51, of Mesa, Washington, defrauded Tyson Foods Inc. and another company out of $244 million by charging them for about 265,000 cattle that did not exist, the office said. Easterday entered a guilty plea for wire fraud in March 2021. He carried out the whole scam with fake invoices and paper over years. So far, no other players have been charged.
The Easterday Ranch is a respectable Washington institution with a rich history. The Easterday family has run the farm for generations.

The criminal case and connected Chapter 11 bankruptcy of Easterday Ranches Inc. and Easterday Farms could lead to the liquidation of an extensive family farm operation in eastern Washington involved in cattle feeding, as well as having 22,500 acres of potatoes, onions, corn and wheat in the Columbia Basin.
A company connected to the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints was the winning bidder for the assets of southeast Washington rancher Cody Easterday, according to court documents filed in federal bankruptcy court. The second-highest bidder was an investment company tied to Microsoft founder Bill Gates. According to court documents in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Eastern Washington, Farmland Reserve was awarded the winning bid of $209 million for the Easterday assets.
Farmland Reserve is operated by the Mormon Church. The second-highest bid was for $208 million from 100C LLC, an investment company owned by Bill Gates. According to the Land Report, Gates is the top farmland owner in the United States.
Farm Reserve Inc. is the investment arm of AgriNorthwest. AgriNorthwest is owned by the Mormon Church and operates farms in Benton and Walla Walla counties in southeast Washington.
According to court documents, Farm Reserve Inc. was the stalking horse bidder on the Easterday properties. If Farm Reserve is not ultimately chosen as the winning bid during a court hearing on July 14, court documents show the company would receive a "break-up fee" of 2.75% of the purchase price of the Easterday properties. Farm Reserve also would receive a $1.5 million expense reimbursement.
Cody Allen Easterday recently turned himself in to a minimum security prison camp at Lompoc just south of Santa Maria, California. It’s likely that Easterday flew down to California in a private jet. Public flight records show the plane leaving Pasco airport Friday, and arriving in Santa Maria, California. The plane used to be owned by Easterday Farms, but now a LLC called Fly Lo out of North Carolina, owns the craft.
As part of his defense, Easterday also admitted to having a gambling habit in court documents – where he lost millions of dollars on the beef futures market.

Turns out, a familiar face has been exposed in the farm game. It turns out Bill Gates of Microsoft and vaccine fame is the primary supplier of french fry potatoes for all of the state of Washington’s golden arched locations.
