The Motive Behind Music Artists Selling Their Publishing Isn’t Always Money
In a post to the Lefzetz Letter, publisher Randall Wixen pointed out that the steady long-term income from music publishing is sometimes overlooked when it comes to the prospect of a giant payday. “I don’t know a single person that has sold their catalog that hasn’t eventually regretted it,” he stated in the post. After paying attorney fees and capitol gains taxes, then getting just a small 0.75% return on the windfall that sits idle in a money market fund, a catalog sale may not look so good in the hindsight of selling what is usually an appreciating asset.
First and foremost for an artist is that a sale will entrust his or her songs to a dedicated music professional that truly cares about the artist’s work rather than to an inexperienced family member not all that interested in the time it takes to administrate the catalog. Sometimes an estate looks more at the cash flow rather than the artist’s legacy. Decisions that are based more on revenue than the artistic merit of the songs themselves have devalued many a catalog, not to mention going against the wishes of the artists. Think back to the Zappa family.
Many of the most popular artists currently selling are in their 70’s. The influx of cash could enable them to embark on that one big project of a lifetime while there’s still time. You can’t spend royalties if you don’t have enough time to collect them, and it’s possible that those payouts might diminish over time as well.

Hipgnosis is traded on the London Stock Exchange, in addition to getting cash from debt; Primary Wave is backed by institutional investors including BlackRock who place money into funds for the music company to spend. Both firms have benefitted from investors of all stripes noticing that the value of music assets are stable, or even growing, during a turbulent time for the markets (thanks to everyone consistently streaming and buying records). As Merck Mercuriadis, founder and CEO of Hipgnosis, put it: “If Donald Trump did something crazy, the price of gold and oil are affected whereas songs are not… [Songs] are always being consumed.”
Who Owns Universal Music Group? Here’s a Quick Overview
Vivendi SE currently owns a 10% share, Tencent Holdings Ltd. owns 20%, and Pershing Square Holdings holds another 10%. The remaining 60% is now owned by outside investors and shareholders, many of whom were formerly shareholders in Vivendi SE.
Interestingly, the IPO quickly positioned Tencent as the largest single shareholder, giving the Chinese-owned media conglomerate considerable sway over future corporate decisions. Previously, Vivendi SE held a controlling 70% stake in Universal Music Group, but opted to divest a 60% ownership chunk to capitalize on a surge in recorded music valuations while alleviating the ‘stock drag’ created by its broad and diverse asset ownership.
New York City-based Blackstone – which in April acquired Death Row Records owner eOne Music (now MNRK Music Group) for $385 million – formally unveiled its agreement with Hipgnosis (specifically Hipgnosis Song Management – not the investment fund itself) and Merck Mercuriadis this morning. The entities’ partnership “will initially deliver c.$1 billion to acquire music rights and manage catalogues,” according to higher-ups, with an emphasis on acquiring stakes “in songs, recorded music, music IP and royalties.”
“Hipgnosis Song Management has firmly established songs as an asset class,” said the longtime music-industry manager Mercuriadis. “This new partnership with Blackstone will deliver financial strength to invest in proven songs as well as grow our song management team and bring additional sophistication to HSM, enabling us to create greater value to our stakeholders including our songwriters and shareholders in SONG.
Blackstone or BlackRock, confused? CEOs Steve Schwarzman and Larry Fink actually did it on purpose
The business that would become BlackRock (NYSE: BLK) started under the umbrella of Schwarzman's firm in 1988. "They used to be called Blackstone Financial," Schwarzman said. "We started in business together. We put up the initial capital." Schwarzman started Blackstone three years earlier in 1985.
When Fink decided to branch out on his own, he needed a new name for his asset management operation, Schwarzman said. "Larry and I were sitting down and he said, 'What do you think sort of about having a family name with "black" in it.'"
Schwarzman said he told Fink it was a "good idea," despite outside advisor warnings to both of them to "make sure you don't have a name that's similar" because "it will completely confuse people." Schwarzman recalled how Fink suggested as a new name for his business "'either BlackPebble or BlackRock,'" saying, "'You know if we do something like this, all of our people will kill us."
Blackstone manages about $368 billion.
Why Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks and more artists have sold their music catalogs
It was announced earlier this month that Young had sold a significant portion to his song catalog for $150 million to Hipgnosis Song Fund.
Keith Richards says that selling catalog means the musician is getting old
The musician revealed that there are no plans to do that and in his opinion it is a sign that the person is getting old when they sell the catalog.
“Mick and I have not spoken about it on a serious level,” he said. “I don’t know if we’re ready to sell our catalog. We might drag it out a bit, put some more stuff in it. The only thing about selling your catalog…it’s a sign of getting old.”
David Coverdale sells his solo, Whitesnake and Deep Purple music rights
The legendary singer David Coverdale, leader of Whitesnake and ex-Deep Purple singer sold his music catalog to Round Hill music that now owns the music publishing, master rights and royalties of his solo career, work Whitesnake and Deep Purple. The price of the acquisition was not revealed.

I look forward immensely to working together with Josh Gruss and all at Round Hill to ensure the legacy of my existing works for future generations to enjoy.”
The Chair of Round Hill Music Royalty Fund Limited, Trevor Bowen, also commented, “The Board is pleased to provide RHM shareholders with access to David Coverdale’s own legendary catalogue of hits as the frontman from one of best-known rock bands of all time, who helped to define an era of music.” “We are delighted to be deploying capital into such high-quality acquisitions while continuing to evaluate further attractive opportunities.”
The chairman and CEO of Round Hill also talked about it, saying, “David Coverdale is a true rock icon. As the frontman for two of the world’s greatest bands, Whitesnake and Deep Purple, he has blazed a trail since the early 70s. His legacy and influence on the generations of artists that followed him cannot be understated. To have been entrusted with David’s work is a proud day for Round Hill.”
Legendary Whitesnake leader and singer David Coverdale, who was also Deep Purple singer from 1973 to 1976 and recorded with Jimmy Page back in the 90’s, confirmed in an interview back in 2021 with Appetite for Distortion (Transcribed by Blabbermouth) that he won’t tour after the upcoming Whitesnake farewell shows but the band will still record new music.
David Bowie’s estate sells his entire music catalog to Warner
The David Bowie estate has sold the late musician’s entire music catalog to Warner Chappell Music in a deal estimated to be worth more than $250 million. The company now owns the rights for the 26 studio albums the musician released during his career from 1967 until the final album Blackstar, released not long before his death in 2016.
As reported by Variety, the Warner Chappell CEO Guy Moot talked about the deal, saying: “All of us at Warner Chappell are immensely proud that the David Bowie estate has chosen us to be the caretakers of one of the most groundbreaking, influential, and enduring catalogs in music history. These are not only extraordinary songs, but milestones that have changed the course of modern music forever.”
“Bowie’s vision and creative genius drove him to push the envelope, lyrically and musically. Writing songs that challenged convention, changed the conversation, and have become part of the canon of global culture. His work spanned massive pop hits and experimental adventures that have inspired millions of fans and countless innovators. Not only in music, but across all the arts, fashion, and media. We are looking forward to tending his unparalleled body of songs with passion and care as we strive to build on the legacy of this most extraordinary human being.”
Talking for David Bowie’s estate and RZO, Allen Grubman, said: “We are truly gratified that David Bowie’s body of music will now be in the capable hands of Warner Chappell Music Publishing. We are sure they will cherish it and take care of it with the greatest level of dignity.”
ZZ Top sells publishing and royalty rights to BMG and KKR
The legendary Texan Blues Rock band ZZ Top, who recently lost their bassist Dusty Hill, sold their entire publishing catalog and royalty rights to BMG and the investment firm KKR. According to Rolling Stone, “the financial terms for the deal were not disclosed, but ZZ Top likely fetched a multimillion dollar sum as the goldrush for legacy act catalogs continues”.
The ZZ Top manager Carl Stubner talked about the deal in a statement, saying: “We are proud to continue working with and expand our long-standing relationship with BMG. This new deal ensures ZZ Top’s remarkable legacy will endure for generations to come.” The BMG CEO, Hartwig Masuch also commented, saying: “This deal is a testament to the success, staying power and continuing musical relevance of ZZ Top, but also to the power of our partnership with KKR. This agreement furthers our vision of providing artists and songwriters not just a financial exit, but also a vehicle committed to respecting and treasuring their artistry.”
Bruce Springsteen sells entire music catalogue to Sony for 500 million dollars
The legendary American guitarist and singer Bruce Springsteen sold his entire music catalogue to Sony for 500 million dollars (200 million than Bob Dylan, for example, who sold his for 300 million). The deal now gives Sony the ownership of his 20 studio albums. The deal was not publicly announced. A Sony Group spokeswoman declined to address the issue and Sony Music affiliate did not respond to AFP’s request for comment.
Mötley Crüe sells entire music catalog rights to BMG
Mötley Crüe sold his entire music catalog rights to BMG according to Variety. After several months of negotiation the Hard Rock band catalog was sold by approximately $150 million dollars. But Variety points that other sources said that is a “significantly lower number”.
The deal included all nine studio albums. The band bought their catalogue from Elektra in the 90’s.
Variety pointed that the number of the sale may change, saying: “There was much behind-the-scenes chatter in the hours after Variety broke news of the deal. While there was a wide discrepancy in the numbers being cited (and some major agendas in play), it’s also possible some of the money was paid upfront, with the remainder being delivered once the group completes its long-delayed North American tour — which is likely to drive up the group’s streaming numbers, from which most of the catalog’s revenue will derive — now scheduled for the summer of 2022.”
Variety also shared an official statement from Mötley Crüe, where they said: “It feels amazing to be collaborating with our new partners at BMG. Their extensive track record of success in rock made them the perfect home to continue preserving and growing our musical legacy. Ensuring we always stay at the top.”
A tour for 2020 including the Crüe, Def Leppard, Joan Jett, and Poison, was postponed till 2022.
David Crosby explains why he sold his songs catalogue
“The deal included the music and publishing rights to Crosby’s solo work, Crosby & Nash, Crosby Stills and Nash, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and The Byrds. David Crosby explains why he sold his songs catalogue: “We had two ways of making money: touring and records. Streaming doesn’t pay us. It’s like you did your job for a month and they gave you a nickel. You’d be pissed. That’s why we are pissed – because they are making billions and not paying the people who are creating the music. So I’m trying to be grateful that I can still play live and pay the rent and take care of my family. But along comes Covid and I can’t play live. That was it. Now I’m broke. I don’t want to lose my home, man. We’ve got an old adobe house here in the middle of a cow pasture. It’s just fucking wonderful. A beautiful, beautiful place in the middle of a bunch of trees. It’s just lovely; it’s not fancy and it’s not rich and it’s not big, but it’s really right. We want to live here all our lives, so I sold my publishing.”
I am selling mine also ...I can’t work ...and streaming stole my record money ...I have a family and a mortgage and I have to take care of them so it’s my only option ..I’m sure the others feel the sameI never thought I would see this. Unfortunately, several artists have sold their song writes in this age where one cannot play live. I cannot speculate on the reason for it. @thedavidcrosby, I assume you still own more recent songs. Would you ever sell? https://t.co/iZlc8eW0HqCojo @CDAWG66
