Abbie Richards
she/her
Video creator
TikToker and TikTok disinformation researcher (Grad Student)
The dark side of wellness: the overlap between spiritual thinking and far-right conspiracies
Like Abbie Richards, a chirpy Lena-Dunham lookalike whose videos about disinformation have gone viral on TikTok. She has become famous for her “conspiracy theory pyramid”, which she uses to lead viewers away from reality, through things that really happened (like the FBI spying on John Lennon), to “the antisemitic point of no return”. She is fabulous.
This article was amended on 22 October 2021. An earlier version referred to “disinformation videos” presented by Abbie Richards; for the avoidance of any doubt, as the article goes on to explain, her videos are about disinformation.
Is a new kind of religion forming on the internet?
Call it the religion of “just asking questions.” Or the religion of “doing your own research.” It’s still in its infancy, and has evolved in an attempt to correct a societal wrong: that the world is a pretty fucked up place and it doesn’t seem like the current system of dealing with it is really working, so maybe something else is going on, something just out of reason’s reach.
Abbie Richards is a 25-year-old disinformation researcher who creates TikToks about how conspiracy theories spread online and who regularly works with scholars to debunk and contextualize harmful myths. She’s watched how chaotic current events — the Astroworld tragedy, Covid-19, the confusing, broken job market — have driven louder conversations around spirituality from TikTokers, no matter where they fall on the ideological or political spectrum. “There’s a collective sense that the world is ending, whether it’s climate change, whether it’s the rapture, the return of Jesus, wealth inequality, Satanic worship, or whether people’s ‘vibrations are too low,’” she says. “It’s the only nonpartisan issue.”
The internet offers endless answers to these kinds of questions, in part due to the way it functions. TikTok, for instance, facilitates a pipeline for viewers that begins the moment they log on, surfacing more and more content related to something they enjoyed in the past. Because of how short TikTok videos are — time is limited to three minutes but they’re often much shorter — viewers can consume 100 videos in the same time span as they could watch a single YouTube video.

Stop blaming TikTok for all the stupid things teens do
On September 22, Idaho-based School Resource Officer Dave Gomez, who shares information about schools and digital safety on a Facebook page with 33,000 followers, posted a list of "upcoming TikTok challenges" as a warning to parents.
Following the "devious lick" challenge, when students stole school equipment and posted about it on TikTok, the list included a warning about a supposed "slap a teacher" challenge.
The problem? There was no evidence the challenge was circulating — or existed at all — on TikTok, Insider found.
Abbie Richards, an independent misinformation researcher who specializes in TikTok and has written for the left-leaning media watchdog Media Matters for America, said that many adults just don't understand TikTok and its culture. This creates an "alarm zone" and makes the app, which was founded in 2016, "a great boogeyman" for parents to place blame on.
The Conspiracy Chart (With Sources!)
190: QAnon - Hot Take With Abbie Richards
Q anon started from 4chan. No. But it stemmed from pizzagate. Only Dems trafficked children (Franklin Scandal). Stupid CT believes there’s a basement, which Abbie is a cold hard detective laughing at the fact that there wasn’t. It’s all BLood Libel from the medieval era. Qanon = CIAnon = LARP. Just happened to get picked up. “Deep State” and Trump is the Godhead lol. States that the “Q” figure switched hands at some point. Nails it at it’s like a religion.
Conspiracy inside of a conspiracy inside of a conspiracy. The first Q poster had no malicious intent. But it was taken over. The O.G. didn’t want to “destroy the world with this one”. Primary claim of Q is the satanic cabal runs the world for years. Adrenochrome is blood libel basically. Brings in Protocols as a double whammy. Calls out Henry Ford for printing that book. All CT stem from the book.
Mommy Bloggers are the new Q. Have to be indoctrinated. Q sucks up other communities. Nobody decides they’re going to wake up anti-Semitic one day. Save the children is what got the mommies in. Massive child trafficking panic. Who doesn’t hate trafficking. CT needs a “grain of truth” to be believed. Also Q took over vibes and astrology.
You’re the most at risk from disinformation when you don’t know something. Don’t go down the rabbit. You’re scared. If you have a weak sense of identity Q will snatch you up.
The problem with the youtube alt right pipeline. Within 20 minutes, two genders, 30 minutes abortion is murder, at 60 minutes disabled people shouldn’t hold office? WTF. She was swiping like she was a teenage boy. This is what happens when you like conservative things lol. Three clicks from JRE to white supremacy.
There’s online courses for media literacy! LIKE CRASH COURSE!!!
Abbie is of course only talking about the people who can’t stop falling down the rabbit hole. The reason they cant stop is they trying to fill a void in their life.
Save the children is basically satanic panic. It’s all evan. Christians. It’s all about an apocalyptic awakening.
Qanon is more anti immigrant in Europe. Ohhh Qanon creates the in and out group.
If you’re defensive you’re probably Q. And you’re a scab.
DO YOU SUFFER FROM ECO-ANXIETY?
DEAR COKE
THE DENIAL MACHINE
I’ll bet dimes to dollars, that Abby is a youth for World Economic Forum recruited out of Southern Cali. She seems curated for Tik Tok . . . Just for this anti Jooooz conspiracy.
